Thomas Popp and David Cook sit down to talk about film students and sound. They talk about how to get started in your quest to become a professional sound mixer.

Summary of the Mantis Discussion: Students in Film and Moving Up

Thomas and David discuss and share stories about how they transitioned from Full Sail University into the film industry. First, Thomas shares his experience moving straight to college to Los Angeles. Even though many professors will tell you to jump straight into the industry, look before you leap. Find housing and research before moving somewhere.
Then, they talk about the role of internships in students transition between college and working. Realize that things have changed over the years.  A college degree does not directly lead to a job and the market is over saturated. As a graduating film student, realize that you have to work your way into the industry. You may need to move to where there is a market to work.

Advice:

“There is a balance between passion and being practical” -David Cook. Pursue your passion but plan realistically to support yourself. Work is not everything in life, make sure you are following a career path that can support the life you want outside of work.
Understand supply and demand. The market gets driven down when people are willing to do the job for less. As a student graduating you have to learn how to navigate getting paid while people are willing to do the job for less.
Work is different than school. In school you ask questions and the professors make sure everyone is up to speed. While working you are expected to learn from watching and have to stay attentive to learn while you work.
“Start at The Bottom and Work Your Way Up” – David Cook.

If you are a Student in Film, a proper audio setup for your computer or mobile device is absolutely pivotal for what is going on in the world post-COVID-19. Check out this blog on setting up proper Zoom audio settings for your next meeting or interview!
