MANTIS DISCUSSION on All Access Gigs with Patrick Straub
Join me in welcoming Patrick Straub to our first Mantis Discussion of the year. Patrick and I are currently working for Showtime on their All Access Documentary Series “Pacquiao vs. Broner”. On an All Access style gig, we have full access to the fighter we are following. Our camp is following Manny Pacquiao leading up to his fight with Adrien Broner on January 19th, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am recording sound for this all access gig.
All Access type gigs require a very calm and professional presence. You are around elite people that have been in the game for years. You need to be on time, and have your equipment primed and ready to roll at a moments notice. We will wait 5 to 6 hours to shoot for 10-15 minutes on one day, followed by complete access to their homes and families filming their Christmas and New Year festivities.
In this podcast we go over all aspects of the job including how information trickles down through from the producers to crew. Its always close to last minute, just always be ready and you will always be set. We also get into a little bit of how to take these gigs when talking to the production. If you want more on that topic, check out this mantis discussion with Blas Kisic that we filmed earlier in 2018.
These jobs are about checking your settings many times to make sure you are ready to go when they roll up. You don’t want to miss anything when you only get one chance to get the scene. These aren’t the run of the gun shoots where you get multiple takes. It has to be right the first time or fixed immediately on the fly.
One quick side note: someone during the live event asked about my equipment setup. Here are some links to the equipment used during the filming of this podcast:
