The New Zaxcom BlueFin 2 Antenna

Zaxcom has just launched its new BlueFin 2 Antenna. This is an upgrade from their original Antenna and is even more tuned for precision. The main difference between the old version and the new BlueFin 2 has a near-perfect SWR (Standing Wave Ratio). It is also slightly smaller and more rounded (with a Z in the middle for the Zaxcom Fan in you). The antenna can be used for both transmission as well as reception, making this a go-to for any Digital Wireless User.

WHY PASSIVE IN AN ACTIVE WORLD?

You may be wondering why this antenna does not have an integrated amplifier. This is because amplifiers not only amplify the signal but also amplify the noise around the signal as well. When it comes to background noise being amplified it can cause more problems at the front end of the receiver than if you use a passive antenna. In other words, this concept is similar to the EQing process – where it is smarter to take away first, before adding…

Front and Back Design of the Zaxcom BlueFin 2 Antenna
BLUEFIN 2 DESIGN

The new design is a log periodic shark fin antenna, which allows for 7 dB of forward gain in a directional pattern. The shape of the antenna offers excellent rejection of interfering signals outside of the direction the antenna is pointed. It has a usable beam of 100 degrees, making it easy to point it in the direction you need. It also has laser machined holes making it aerodynamic when placed upon an antenna bar. Above all, the Z in the middle of the antenna acts as a miniature flux capacitor… ok that part isn’t true, but it looks cool.

TRANSMISSION OR RECEPTION

The BlueFin 2 design allows for both Receiving and Transmitting. Because it offers an exceptionally low, near ideal, SWR (standing wave ratio), it will transmit with nearly 100% of the energy radiated. Paired with any wireless microphone or IFB system the range of coverage is almost doubled in the direction the antenna is pointed relative to dipole or whip antennas. The BlueFin 2 can be ordered in one of two configurations: The BlueFin 2.5 Covers 470 – 620 MHz, while the BlueFin 2.5F has a 44 MHz Custom Tuned Window which allows you to pick your center frequency of choice (492 – 598 MHz). These versions need to be special ordered in order to be machined to your exact requirements. This is perfect for people that want to fine tune their system better than ever before.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this antenna will make a perfect home on anyone’s antenna mast. Depending on the version you get, you will have either the most precise passive antenna on the market, or a filtered version that can and will fine turn your setup even more, dramatically eliminates signals outside of the bandpass of the antenna’s filter. This is a for sure purchase for anyone who needs extra range and doesn’t want to raise the noise floor while doing it in their RF chain.
